Welcome to the fourth video from PiControl Solutions on practical Industrial System Identification and Process Control as we continue with a series of short, practical, and useful educational videos.

Second-order processes on step tests react in two very original shapes: S-shape and a Wavy shape. But it is sometimes very difficult to distinguish it from first-order processes, especially when large noise and continuous disturbances are present. Second-order processes in industry mostly are the result of a poor process control, especially when control is too aggressive or even oscillatory. There are also examples of second-order processes caused by the nature of the process itself, as they depend on the degree of either heat or mass transfer.

We have already seen how to visually identify zero and first-order transfer function model parameters. Now there are four transfer function model parameters: process deadtime, process gain and two time constants. But what about second-order transfer function model parameters?

PiControl multivariable closed-loop system identification software called PITOPS can easily identity zero (integrating), first-order and second order transfer function parameters using historical plant data. It is also the only software product that performs truly closed-loop system identification with the secondary (cascade/slave) PID controllers while they are kept in Cascade (Remote) mode. No other competitor tool can do successful transfer function identification using data with PID controllers in Cascade modes.

PiControl real-time process control simulation software for training and education called SIMCET can simulate real-time behavior of all transfer function models, even when they are impacted with large noise and continuous disturbances.

More information on how to visually or iteratively (using our software technology) identify zero (integrating), first-order and second-order transfer function model parameters can be found in PiControl industrial and practical process control training courses.
